Operating Instructions-Type 310A
3. If converting from 117-volt to 234-volt nominal line
voltage or vice versa, change the line-cord power plug to
match the power-source receptacle or use a suitable adap
ter.
4. If converting from 117-volt to 234-volt nominal line
voltage or vice versa, change the line fuse as follows:
117-volts nominal
1.6 ampere, slow-blow
234-volts nominal
0.8 ampere, slow-blow
5.
Change the voltage tag on the rear of the instrument
to indicate the correct regulating range. The new tag can be
obtained from your local Tektronix Field Office or repre
sentative. State the regulating range desired.
This instrument is designed to be used w ith a three-wire
AC power system. If a three- to two-wire adapter is used to
connect this instrument to a two-wire AC power system, be
sure to connect the ground lead o f the adapter to ground.
Failure to complete the ground system may allow the
chassis to be elevated above ground potential and pose a
shock hazard.
Operating Temperature
The Type 310A is cooled by convection air flo w through
the holes in the cabinet. For this reason, it is im portant to
choose a location fo r the instrument where the air flo w is
not restricted or the temperature of the cooling air is not
higher than the ambient temperature. The clearance pro
vided by the feet at the bottom and rear should be main
tained. A llo w several inches clearance on the sides.
A thermal cutout provides thermal protection and dis
connects the power to the instrument if the internal tem
perature exceeds a safe operating level. If the thermal cut
out opens frequently, choose a different location fo r the
instrument which provides better air circulation, or pro
vides forced-air cooling. An accessory fan base is available
fo r use w ith the Type 310A. This fan base is particularly
useful when the Type 310A is placed in a permanent loca
tion. In addition to providing forced-air cooling, the fan
base elevates the fro n t of the instrument. This makes it
easier to view the display and adjust the front-panel con
trols. The fan base can be ordered through your local Tek
tronix Field Office or representative.
Operating Position
Rubber feet are provided both on the bottom and rear
of the Type 310A. In some locations, it may be easier to
view the display when the instrument is set on the rear feet.
Flowever, the air flo w through the instrument is restricted
in this position reducing the cooling effeciency. Therefore,
the instrument may overheat.
CONTROLS A N D CONNECTORS
General
A brief description of the function and operation o f the
front- and rear-panel controls and connectors follows. Fig.
2-2 shows the fro n t and rear panels of this instrument.
More detailed inform ation is given in this section under
General Operating Information.
Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT)
FOCUS
Provides adjustment fo r a well defined
display.
INTENSITY
Controls brightness of display.
SCALE ILLU M
Dual purpose control to determine
graticule illumination and to apply
power to the instrument. In the fu lly
counterclockwise position, power is
o ff. As the control is rotated clockwise
out of the detent, power is applied to
the instrument and the graticule lights
come on at maximum intensity. Con
tinued rotation o f the control reduces
the graticule illum ination.
Vertical
VO LTS/D IV
Selects vertical deflection factor in
1-2-5 sequence (Variable VO LTS/D IV
control must be in C ALIBR ATED
position fo r indicated deflection).
Variable VO LTS/
DIV (not labeled-
red knob concen
tric w ith VO LTS/
DIV switch)
Provides continuously variable uncali
brated deflection factors between the
calibrated settings of the VO LTS/D IV
switch. U N CALIBRATED V E R TIC A L
light at lower right corner o f fro n t
panel indicates when the Variable
V O LTS/D IV control is not in the
C ALIBR ATE D position.
INPUT
Input connector fo r vertical deflection
signals.
Input Coupling
Determines method o f coupling input
(AC-DC)
signal to vertical amplifier.
AC: DC component of input signal is
blocked. Low frequency - 3 dB
point is about two hertz.
DC: A ll frequency components o f the
input signal are passed to the ver
tical amplifier.
