A.3.3 Adjusting the beam alignment for the total intensity channel
Once the deflector/rotator lens settings have been optimized, go on to adjust the deflectors
in the Ferrum Spin Detector, i.e., Lens1DeflectionX, Lens1DeflectionY, Lens3DeflectionX and
Lens3DeflectionY. Change the values under SpinDetector Control
Set Voltages
and click
Apply,
see Figure 41.
The settings Scattering Energy and Lens 1 to Lens 4 should not be changed. At the end of the
optimization, Lens1Stigmator and Lens3Stigmator could be used to increase the intensity.
It may be necessary to optimize the deflector settings for the deflector/rotator lens and the
Ferrum detector iteratively several times.
A.3.4 Adjusting the beam alignment with the spin channel
Since the channeltron which measures scattered electrons in the Ferrum detector is at
another position than the channeltron which measures the total intensity, see the Ferrum
Spin Detektor manual, the beam alignment must also be done for the spin channel.
The procedure is similar to the beam alignment for the total intensity channel:
1.
Connect to the PHOIBOS Spin analyzer and the SpinDetectorControl in Device
Controls in Prodigy.
2.
Use the PHOIBOS Spin Adjustment Template to set up the experiment. Operate the
PHOIBOS Spin analyzer in the LAD mode with E
kin
= 40 eV and E
p
= 20 eV.
3.
Start the fixed energy scan in overwrite mode.
4.
Set the parameter values under SpinDetector Control
Set Voltages
and click
Apply,
see Figure 44. Use the parameter values from the test report as start values. Table
12 contains typical parameter values.
5.
Optimize the intensity by varying Lens1DeflectionX, Lens1DeflectionY,
Lens3DeflectionX and Lens3DeflectionY. The settings Scattering Energy and Lens 1 to
Lens 4 should not be changed. At the end of the optimization, Lens1Stigmator and
Lens3Stigmator could be used to increase the intensity.
6.
Change the setting RotL from +1 to -1 and back. The signal should change at most
5% when changing rotation direction.
