Troubleshooting 

The information in this chapter can help you identify and solve problems that may occur. 
Checking the functionality of the PCU 300 preamplifier can help confirm if the CEMs in the 
Ferrum detector are working correctly. 
 
A set of tables contain pin-outs of the electronics specific to the 2D–CCD / 3D-VLEED 
Detector. These allow you to check the operation of the electronics. 
 
In addition to the information in this chapter, please also refer to the test report for 
examples of settings and data obtained with your instrument before delivery. 

4.1

 

Amplifier check 

The PCU 300 is mounted directly onto the Ferrum detector. It contains a preamplifier that 
amplifies the signal from the CEMs before it is sent to the counting electronics. The following 
test checks that the preamplifier is working correctly. If the PCU 300 works correctly, any 
problems with the channel are likely to come from the CEM. 
  
To check the operation of the PCU 300: 

1.

 

Disconnect the two BNC signal cables from the PCU 300.  

2.

 

Start a scan in SpecsLab Prodigy. 

3.

 

Use a wire to touch the pin of the two BNC signal inputs. You should see a signal in 
your SpecsLab Prodigy. There must be a signal for each channel. If no signal is 
observed for some channels, these channels of the preamplifier are not working. 

  
Please note the following points: 

•

 

If there is no signal from both channels or a constant signal is observed, check that 
the preamplifier is on (green LED for CAN connection is on). 

•

 

If the maximum count rate is achieved, the measurement will stop. To avoid this, 
increase the threshold to about 15 mV or use a resistor of about 100 Ω for the 
check. See "Discriminator Threshold" in Section 4.2. Remember to set the 
discriminator back to the original values after the test.
