NK8000 Network planning
NK8000 networks can be built as a dedicated safety- and security IP network, or can
be integrated into an existing customer network (shared network). The IT rules apply
in both cases.
5.1
IT rules
The NK8000 network supports the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseT standard, which is
based on a star topology.
The cable specification for this standard is minimum Cat.5 UTP. We recommend you
use Cat.6 cable, however, which fulfils the specification for 100BaseTX networks.
Note: The maximum length for an Ethernet segment for Ethernet 10BaseT and
100BaseTX is 100m.
5.1.1
Repeater rules
It is possible to extend the Ethernet length using repeaters (hubs). However, you can-
not use infinite repeaters to extend the cable.
Note: The transfer speed determines the number of repeaters you can install.
10Mbps network
For a 10Mbps network, the 5-4-3 repeater rule is valid. This rule means that you can
attach a maximum of 5 segments, with 4 repeaters in serial, but you can only attach 3
segments to other devices.
The better way to extend line length is using a bridge/switch, or a router or fibre ca-
bles. Consider the extra costs using this method.
