The PPP Dial-on-demand option is a standard PPP option. This option triggers the modem dial-out
when there is traffic passing through the modem link. The modem hangs up when traffic stops within the
time set in the PPP Disconnect-idle-timeout option. When Dial-on-demand is enabled, the presence
of traffic controls the operation of the modem link.
When using a PPP interface with link failover, the link failover On-demand option allows link failover
to bring up or take down the PPP interface as needed. Link failover triggers the modem dial-out to
establish a PPP connection and pass traffic over the modem link when the main link is down. When the
main link is up again, link failover takes down the PPP interface. The PPP Disconnect-idle timeout
setting does not apply to the PPP interface when the interface is brought up by link failover.
The link failover On-demand option and the PPP Dial-on-demand option are mutually
exclusive: only one of these options should be set for a PPP interface.
