7–2 • Bridging Module
TES9 Software User Manual (Iss. 04)
Overview
The Bridging module allows WST data in a SMPTE 259 625 line video signal to be bridged to
VANC data in a SMPTE 292 1080i/50 Hz video signal, or vice versa. The VANC data in the
SMPTE 292 signal conforms to Operational Practice OP-47. In this chapter, the term “bridging”
refers to extracting the data from one video signal (either Program 1 or Program 2) of the TES9
and inserting the data in a different format into the other video signal of the TES9. In practice,
bridging WST data will usually involve the use of two TES9s, one to bridge from WST in the 259
video to OP-47 packets in the 292 video, and then a second TES9 downstream in the 292 video
path to bridge from OP-47 packets in the 292 video back to WST data in the 259 video.
Before configuring the Bridging module, you must specify the Requested Video Format on both
the Program 1 and Program 2 tab of the main menu. For the video signal to be used to extract or
insert the WST data, the Requested Video Format must be set to SD 625 Line. For the video
signal to be used to extract or insert the OP-47 packets, the Requested Video Format must be set
to match the video format being used. This will usually be HD 1080i 50Hz.
When a Bridging module is selected for configuration in either tab (Program 1 or Program 2) of
the main TES9Set menu, the Bridging Configuration menu is displayed.
Bridging Configuration Menu
Note that the Bridging module, if configured, appears in the list of modules for both tabs of the
main menu, and can be configured from either tab. Even though the configuration can be
displayed or changed from either tab, there is, in fact, only one Bridging module on the TES9.
The upper portion of the Bridging Configuration menu describes the data that is to be extracted. If
this is WST data, then there is a set of check boxes to specify which of the lines in the range 6 to
22 is to be bridged. If the data is OP-47 VANC packets, then the DID, SDID and Line Selection
for the OP-47 packets are specified.
The list box in the center of the menu indicates the direction in which the data is to be bridged
(i.e. from WST to OP-47, or from OP-47 to WST) and the Program side (1 or 2) associated with
each type of data. It is also used to disable the bridging function, if desired.
If data is being bridged from WST to OP-47, then the lower portion of the menu indicates the
DID, SDID and Line Selection for the OP-47 packets. If data is being bridged from OP-47 to
WST, then the lower portion of the menu is blank, since the lines on which the WST data is
inserted will be the same as the lines from which the data was extracted.
Note
— When selecting the lines from which to extract WST data, you should not include
any lines which may contain data conforming to standards other than WST (e.g. VANC
data), since that data could possibly be interpreted as WST data and cause errors in the
stream of bridged data.
