5–4 • Captioning Module
TES9 Software User Manual (Iss. 04)
Port Settings
The caption module is unique in that it can have more than one port assigned to it. There are three
potential ports for captioning encoding input and two potential ports for decoded captioning
output.
Normally a caption server connected to an encoder has total control over the captioning behavior
of the encoder. This is true when only the primary captioning port is in use. When the secondary
captioning port is in use, it controls the streams that it encodes into. The same is true for the XDS
port. When you turn on a captioning port the operation of the TES9 automatically adapts to which
ports control which caption streams.
Primary Captioning Port Tab
The settings for the Primary Captioning port are shown in the figure for the captioning module
above. To enable the use of the port you must select a port other than None. The choices are LAN
ports, serial ports or modem. Selecting None disables the use of the port. If you selected a serial
port, a button appears showing the current settings for the serial port. The serial port parameters
may be changed by pressing the button.
Primary Port Stream Mapping Menu
When you first enable the Primary Captioning Port a dialog is presented asking you how you
intend to use the port (shown above). Select the default of normal captioning unless you will be
using this port to add a second language to video which already has a first language and the
caption server providing the data will be providing the data as if it was the primary language.
Setting the Source to none does not turn off the encoding of Redistribution Control Program
Descriptor (Broadcast Flag) packets if they were enabled.
Echo Commands
This check box indicates that commands and lines of Real-time mode data received by the
encoder are to be echoed back as they are received. As well, the command or line of data being
entered can be corrected using the Backspace key, before terminating the line with a Carriage
Return.
If the encoder is being controlled by host software that does not expect commands that it sends to
be echoed back, then this box should not be checked. If, however, the encoder is being controlled
by a user entering commands manually, with a terminal emulator such as HyperTerminal, then it
is useful to have this option enabled.
Note
— A port must be assigned to the primary captioning port for the captioning module
to be enabled. When the primary port is set to None, all other captioning ports and
functionality is also disabled.
Note
— The default settings for most caption servers to talk serially to a caption encoder
is 9600,N,8,1 with software (XON/XOFF) flow control.
