THE RADCLIFFE WHEELBASE

SEATING SYSTEM
Your wheelbase has been supplied
with the Seating System fitted. If it is
a requirement to have the seat re-
moved from the wheelbase check
with your wheelchair service to
identify what type of interface has
been used to secure the seat to the
wheelbase. If it is a Radcliffe Inter-
face then proceed as follows:
•
Release the interface cam
locks - there are two on each
side - located over the top
seat rails.
•
Gently pull up and lift the seat
in line with seating supplier’s
instructions.
If a Radcliffe Interface has not been used, refer to your Wheelchair Service or Seating
Supplier for instructions.

OPERATING AND APPLYING THE SHADOW MK4 BRAKES
Your wheelbase is fitted with hand operated hub brakes to allow regulation of speed on
hills and whilst travelling along. These are located on the push handles.
•
To apply the brakes, pull the brake levers (1) evenly and smoothly towards the
handle and bring the wheelbase to a stop.
•
To lock the brakes on, pull the brake levers until it is possible to engage the lock-
ing lever in the second of the three ratchet positions.
•
Still pulling the lever (1), push the locking lever in direction 2 into the second
ratchet position to secure the brakes.
•
To release the brakes, push the locking lever in direction 3, whilst pulling the brake
lever.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The hub brakes should be used to regulate the speed
on slopes. Secondary attendant brakes are available
and recommended if the wheelbase is to be parked
or used frequently on slopes.

16 MANOEUVRING KERBS AND STEPS
16.1
To Go Up a Kerb
•
Have the wheelbase facing the kerb. Swing away the anti-tippers, firmly hold the
push handles and place your foot on the silver tipping lever (see page 7 item 11).
Then pull the handles towards you and with your foot, push down and forward on the
tipping lever. This will raise the front wheels to clear the step.
•
Continue tipping until the wheelbase is “balanced” on the back wheels. When
“balanced” little to no effort is required to hold the wheelbase in this tipped position,
removing the foot should not cause any excessive increase in the effort to hold the
wheelbase steady with the hands only.
•
With the Wheelbase “balanced” keep a firm grip on the push handles and push
chair forward up onto the pavement.
•
If there was a need to change the tilt angle, reposition tilt to its original position.
NOTE: DO NOT attempt to raise the front wheels without using the tipping levers. This
could result in the carer straining their back and will place excessive loading on the push
handles.
16.2
To Go Down a Kerb
NOTE: DO NOT TIP THE WHEELBASE FORWARD AS THE OCCUPANT MAY FALL OUT.
•
Firmly hold the push handles and place your foot on the silver tipping lever (see page
7 item 11). Then pull the handles towards you and with your foot, push down and
forward on the tipping lever. Raise the front wheels until the chair is balanced.
•
With the Wheelbase “balanced” move carefully forward and lower the wheelbase
down the kerb whilst it is tilted on its rear wheels.
•
Place your foot back on the tipping lever and carefully lower the front wheels back
on the ground.
•
If there was a need to change the tilt angle, reposition tilt to its original position.
16.3
Slopes
•
When the Seating System was fitted to the Shadow Wheelbase the stability of the
complete system (wheelbase and seating system) would have been checked by
the Rehabilitation Engineer
•
When used on slopes the stability of the wheelbase is changed. If the wheelbase is
parked, it is recommended that it is facing forwards down the slope.
The combined weight of the wheelbase seating system and occupant may be very
heavy and care should be taken when negotiating slopes, particularly when going
down . BE AWARE of the DANGER and have a second assistant to help push up the
slope or hold to go down. The hub brakes should be used to regulate the speed on
slopes. Secondary attendant brakes are available and recommended if the wheelbase
is to be parked or used frequently on slopes.
