Maintenance and Performance Checks 5-22

PLL Adjustment

Equipment:

Counter, Pulse/Function Generator, 3 BNC cables, 2 50

Ω

feedthrough termination, “T” BNC connector

Configure the Model 3162B as follows:

Function:

Square

Frequency:  10 kHz
Amplitude:  3 V
PLL Mode:  ON
Phase Offset

Using the “T” BNC connector, connect one BNC from the
pulse/function generator SYNC output to the counter (channel A). and
the other BNC to the 3162B trigger input. Set pulse/function generator
frequency to 5 kHz.

3.

Connect the 3162B channel A output to the counter (channel B).
Observe that the front-panel PLL LED illuminates.

4.

Set counter to phase measurements and adjust R98 on the main
board for a phase reading of 16

Troubleshooting

The troubleshooting instructions contained in this section are intended for
qualified personnel having basic understanding of analog and digital circuitry.
The individual should also be experienced at using typical test equipment as
well as ordinary troubleshooting procedures. The information presented here
has been written to assist in isolating a defective circuit or circuit section.
Isolation to a specific component is left to the technician.

Recommended test equipment for troubleshooting and adjustment of the Model
3162A/B is listed in the section entitled

Recommended Test Equipment

in the beginning of this chapter. Other equipment such as a logic analyzer, in-
circuit emulator, etc., could also be helpful in a difficult situation.

Power-up Tests

Upon power-up, the Model 3162A/B performs a set of tests. If the instrument
locks up after power on, proceed with the troubleshooting procedure given in
the following paragraphs.
