16. Build and install the driver modules from the source code.

make install

The GNU executes the

makefile

included in the

qlge/

directory and then

does the following:



Builds the QLogic networking driver .ko files



Copies the .ko file to the appropriate

/lib/modules/

[Kernel_version]

/kernel/drivers/net/ql

ge/

directory.

Figure 4-13

shows the

make install

command execution log.

17. Load the driver into the operating system by creating a new RAMDISK

image. Loading the driver in this way enables the new driver to load early in
the kernel boot sequence and is persistent across reconfigurations.

Change to the directory that contains the RAMDISK images.

cd /boot

Create a backup copy of the RAMDISK (initrd) image.

cp initrd-

[kernel version]

.img initrd-

[kernel

version]

.img.bak
