GOING UP STAIRS WITH AN ATTENDANT

Move backwards towards the step so that the rear wheels
of the wheelchair touch it.
Grip  the  rear  handles  of  the  wheelchair  tightly  and  pull

hard  while  keeping  the  wheelchair  tilted  (with  the  front
wheels  raised  in  order  to  prevent  the  occupant  from
slipping out of the chair) until the rear wheels are over the

step.
Keeping the wheelchair tilted, move it away from the step

enough to allow the front wheels to touch the same level
ground.

To make raising the front of wheelchair easier for the attendant, it is advisable to equip
the wheelchair with the accessory “tipping aid”.

3.6

Ensuring stability

The  stability  of  the  wheelchair  has  to  be  such  to  prevent  its  tipping  back  even  the  most
disadvantageous situation on this point of view that is with maximum seat inclination.

The wheelchair is originally assembled and delivered with its rear wheels set to a safety position.

However,  some  parameters  that  are  strictly  related  to  the  user  (for  instance  a  backrest  angle
particularly open, the user’s weight, etc.) can affect the stability of the wheelchair.
In such case it will be necessary to move the rear wheels.

The stability of the wheelchair with its seat at maximum inclination is considered as such in static
situation. In fact, should the user be subjected to frequent or sporadic spasms or contraction and if

these occur while the seat is at its maximum inclination, the stability of the wheelchair may not be
enough.

This is why the wheelchair is always provided with two anti-tip wheels that will work as emergency
device against the risk of tipping back.

The user may make more or less simple or deliberate movements that, if out of control or made
with no attention, can result in a loss of stability and in possible overbalancing of the chair.

Hereafter we report some of such situations.

The attendant must always keep control over the wheelchair.

LEANING FORWARDS

Ensure  that  the  front  wheels  of  the  chair  are  pointing
forwards.  In  order  to  do  this,  move  the  chair  forwards
and then backwards.

Put  on  the  brakes  in  order  to  prevent  the  chair  from
moving suddenly during the movement.
Lean forward in such a way that your upper body does

not move beyond the front wheels at any time. Moving
the  weight  of  the  body  excessively  forward  may  cause

the  wheelchair  to  tip  up  onto  the  front  wheels  and
overbalance possibly causing harm to both the chair and
the occupant.

In order to ensure greater stability the occupant should
hold on to the wheelchair with his or her free hand.

Do not lean too far forward; you may fall out of the chair.
Do not move forward by sliding your pelvis across the seat cushion in order to

reach objects that are too far away. The chair could overbalance.

LEANING BACKWARDS

Ensure that the front wheels of the chair are pointing forwards.

In  order  to  do  this,  move  the  wheelchair  forwards  and  then
backwards.

Do not engage the brakes.
Lean backwards without changing your sitting position.

Do not lean too far back over the backrest, the
wheelchair could overbalance.

LEANING OUT TO THE SIDE

Do not move your upper body beyond the rear wheel as the

wheelchair could overbalance.

With your free hand, for greater safety and stability, hold on to

the wheelchair.

Do  not  lean  too  far  out  to  the  side,  the

wheelchair could overbalance.
