Techniques for Collecting Spectra . 89
5.
Select
Monitor
from the Measurement menu.
The Live tab is displayed.
NOTE:
Before you collect the sample spectrum, you should monitor the spectrum to make
sure that there is good contact between the crystal and the sample.
6.
Use the toggle bar to lower the ATR crystal to its working position.
7.
Raise the stage carefully until the sample touches the crystal.
CAUTION
To prevent accidental damage to the ATR crystal, always bring the
sample slowly up to the crystal, rather than lowering the crystal directly
on to the sample.
8.
Select
Sample
.
The spectrum at the current aperture position is displayed.
9.
Make sure that the spectrum monitored is satisfactory.
If your sample is soft or there is poor contact, you may need to increase the contact of
the crystal with the sample, by raising the stage slightly.
10.
When the spectrum is satisfactory, click
Scan
.
The software will again prompt you to lower the crystal and raise the stage but these
messages can be cleared by clicking
OK
. The spectrometer starts to scan and the
spectrum is displayed as it is collected.
CAUTION
Always retract the ATR crystal immediately after data collection has
been completed, in order to avoid accidental damage.
Automated ATR Objective
Collecting a Background Spectrum
To collect a background spectrum in air:
1.
Select
ATR
in the Sampling Mode section of the Setup Microscope tab.
2.
Select the
Scan Settings
you want in the Setup Instrument Basic tab.
3.
Set the infrared aperture to a suitable size and rotation on the Setup Microscope tab.
For information on how to do this see the Spectrum on-screen Help.
The contact area of the ATR objective is approximately 100 µm in diameter. We
therefore recommend that you use a maximum aperture size of 100
×
100 µm.
4.
Select
Background
from the Measurement menu.
The software will prompt you to lower the stage to prevent a collision when the ATR
crystal is lowered.
