Special precautions relating to vibrations
Long-term use of machines that vibrate a lot can cause the following symptoms:
♦
Loss of feeling in your hands, which can become permanent and you may lose all
feeling in your hands.
♦
It may become difficult to pick small items up like screws or nails.
♦
You may develop “white finger” more often and in more than one finger.
How to protect yourself from vibrations
1.
Always use the most suitable tool for the task (so that the work can be executed as
quickly as possible and you are exposed to hand-arm vibrations for as little a time as
possible).
2.
Inspect the equipment before use to ensure that it is properly maintained and
repaired to avoid vibrations caused by faults or wear.
3.
Ensure that the chain is kept sharp to maintain effectiveness.
4.
Ensure that you do not work overly long with the equipment at any one time and that
you carry out other tasks in between.
5.
Avoid gripping the equipment or unit harder than necessary.
6.
Store the equipment so that the handles are not too cold when you come to use the
equipment next time.
