Felling a tree
1.
Determine the direction in which the tree will fall by checking the wind conditions, the
angle of the tree and the thickness of the trunk, the position of thick branches, the
work tasks after the felling and other factors.
2.
While the area around the tree is being cleared, ensure you have a firm footing and an
escape route.
3.
Make a notch cut of about 1/3 into the tree on the side of the tree that is in the
direction of the fall. Make the felling cut on the opposite side of the notch cut, slightly
higher than the bottom of the notch cut.
WARNING
Ensure that other persons in the area are warned that a tree is going to
be felled.
Cutting and trimming
WARNING
•
Always make sure you have a firm footing. Do not stand on the log.
•
Be aware that a cut log can roll. Especially on slopes. Always stand on the
side of the log that is uphill.
•
Follow the safety instructions relating to kickback.
Before starting the work check the direction of the bending force in the log that is to
be cut. Always finish the section from the opposite side of the bending force to avoid
the guide bar becoming trapped in the cut.
Saw halfway through, roll the log around and then
saw from the opposite side.
