Overwrite vs. Append

Every backup operation presents you with a choice of either appending the current
project to the end of the tape, or overwriting any previous material on the tape.

Overwrite Mode:

Overwrite mode should only be used in two circumstances: a) to

format a brand-new tape before its first use as a RADAR II backup tape, and b) if
you explicitly want to erase the contents of a previous backup tape.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Be 

very sure

that you want to perform an overwrite operation on a tape that

contains data.  There is 

NO WAY

to recover any audio from a tape that has been

overwritten.

Append Mode:

This mode is used most of the time, and simply appends the new

dataset to the end of the last dataset on the tape.

Every time you perform a backup operation, RADAR II builds a Table of Contents
which contains all datasets on the tape.  This information is available to you when
restoring audio – and enables you to restore only the audio that you need.

8.3.4  About Backup Options...

RADAR II provides four options for backup:  All Projects, Current Versions,
Current Project, and Selected Projects.

8.3.4.1  All Projects

Backup via the All Projects method takes all projects (and all audio) on the system
and backs it up to tape.  If the amount of audio required by the All Projects method
exceeds the capacity of a single tape, RADAR II prompts the user to insert
additional tape(s) when appropriate (see §8.4).

When you select the “All Projects” method, the system prompts you to enter a name
for the dataset.  (This name defaults to “FULL BACKUP”, but you may enter any
name of up to 16 characters to be more descriptive, and to avoid later confusion!)

After entering and confirming the name for the data set, RADAR II them prompts
you to select either the “Overwrite” or “Append” option before proceeding.

Please Note: 

The system always defaults to “Append” because “Overwrite” is potentially
destructive to previous data set(s) on the tape.
