b) Breakage of wires on the end connection

 

Broken wires on or near the end connection are due to major localised stress and are possibly 
due to an incorrect mounting of the anchoring sockets. 
Identify  the  exact  cause  of  the  damage  and  possibly  mount  the  anchoring  sockets  more 
accurately after shortening the rope provided it is long enough for future uses.

If a strand breaks, replace the wire rope. 
 
 
 

d) Elasticity decrease 

In  some  cases  the  rope  can  undergo  a  considerable  loss  of  elasticity  that  makes  future  uses 
dangerous.  Evaluation  of  elasticity  decrease  is  difficult  and  requires  the  advice  of  an  expert. 
This defect is usually associated to the following phenomena: 

•

  Reduction of the rope diameter. 

•

  Rope elongation. 

•

  Lack  of  space  between  the  single  wires  and  the  strands  caused  by  the  mutual 

compression of the different elements. 

•

  Presence of a fine dark dust inside the strands. 

•

  No breakage is visible but the rope is much stiffer to handle and has a higher diameter 

reduction than the one caused by the deterioration of single wires. Such a condition can 
lead  to  a  sudden  break  of  the  rope  under  dynamic  load  and  justifies  an  immediate
