 INSTALLATION 

ORBAN MODEL  

 

 

The PC Remote software is supplied on a CD shipped with your 5700i. You can also 
download it from 

Instructions for using the PC Remote software begin on page 3-80. 

Installing the Necessary Windows Services 

The 5700i PC Remote application uses Windows’ built-in communications and net-
working services to deal with the low-level details necessary to communicate with 
the 5700i’s serial port. (These services are also used to upgrade your 5700i’s firmware 
when updates are available from Orban.) The exact process will vary, depending on 
how you wish to set up the communications. That is: 

If you want to communicate through a local PC, you will need to establish a connec-

tion between a serial (COM) port of the PC and the COM port of your 5700i 
through a null modem cable (supplied with your 5700i). You will then use Win-
dows Direct Serial Connect to make the basic connection. 

If you want to communicate through a pair of modems, you will use the Windows 

Dial-Up networking service to make the connection. 

You must install the appropriate communications services in Windows (if they 
are not already installed) before you can run 5700i Remote software. 

You may 

therefore need to have access to the Windows install disk(s) — or have their im-
age copied onto your computer’s hard drive — before you attempt to use the 
5700i PC Remote application

. 

In all cases, regardless of whether your PC communicates to the 5700i 
through its serial port or Ethernet connector, it uses the ppp and the 
TCP/IP protocols to communicate with the 5700i. 

Check Hardware Requirements 

To connect your PC to your 5700i, regardless of the method you choose, you will 
need the following: 

Orban 5700i OPTIMOD-FM. 

•

 

If connecting by serial cable:

 a null modem cable (also called a “reverse” cable). 

This cable has DB9 female connectors at both ends for connecting the 5700i to 
the serial port on your computer. If your computer has a DB25 connector, you 
will need to obtain an adapter. 

•

 

If connecting by modem:

 a 3Com/U.S. Robotics® 56kbps fax modem EXT and 

normal (not null) modem cable for the 5700i side of the connection. Note that 
Orban Customer Service does not support any other type of modem for connect-
ing to the 5700i. 

•

 

If connecting by network:

 a standard Ethernet cable (with RJ45 connectors) to
