Appendix F. Network Address Translation
For a computer to communicate with OME-ET-7000/OME-PET-7000 modules on
the Internet, OME-ET-7000/OME-PET-7000 modules must have a public IP address.
Basically, it works like your street address - as a way to find out exactly where you
are and deliver information to you.
Network Address Translation (NAT) allows a single device, such as a router, to act
as an agent between the Internet (or "public network") and a local (or "private")
network. This means that only a single, unique IP address is required to represent
an entire group of computers.
A type of NAT in which a private IP address is mapped to a public IP address, where
the public address is always the same IP address (i.e., it has a static address). This
allows an internal host, such as an OME-ET-7000/OME-PET-7000 module, to have
an unregistered (private) IP address and still be reachable over the Internet.
