Š Make sure the modem’s initialization string is set to a fixed DTE rate.
Š Make sure the port is set to CTS/RTS flow control, and make sure the modem initialization
string contains the correct commands to set the modem to CTS/RTS flow control. Check your
modem documentation for more information.
Š If the modems at the two sites do not synchronize, reduce the baud rates at both sites to a lower
rate.
Š Reset the port, turn the modem off, then turn it back on.
Š Isolate the port or the modem causing the problem. For example, you might try the modem
with another port.
Š If your computer or port is hanging or the modem is not initializing, check the IO port address
conflict for an IRQ conflict with another board.
Š If your connection is slow compared to the modem capability, check to see if the baud rate
configured for port is greater than the maximum baud rate supported by the aiocomx.nlm port
driver. A warning is recorded in the log file if this occurs. If you want to configure a higher
baud rate for the port, reload the aiocomx.nlm with the maxrate option.

Troubleshooting Modems
You can configure modems in different ways. There is no set method for solving your modem
connection problems; however, there are some basic strategies you can follow and configuration
changes you can try if your modem connection fails. Try using the following strategies in the order
they are listed:
Š Make sure the modem initialization strings at both GroupWise sites are set for a fixed DTE
rate. Check your modem documentation for more information.
Š Make sure flow control at the port definition and in the modem initialization string is set to
CTS/RTS (hardware flow control). Check your modem documentation for initialization
codes.
Š Disable data compression at both GroupWise sites. If you are using the Async Gateway, data
compression should be disabled on the modems of the local and remote GroupWise domains.
This is because the gateway compresses files before they are transferred to the modem. In
many cases, if the modem attempts to compress a file that has been compressed, modem
performance can be affected. See your modem documentation for more information about
disabling data compression.
Š Lower the selected baud rate until the modems connect.
Š Create a new modem initialization string. For more information, see “Creating a Modem
Initialization String” on page 119 .
Š Use aioterm.nlm to troubleshoot Async NLM
