Choosing a parachute
The parachute container is made from elasticated material. The flexibility of this
material allows small or large parachutes to be fitted. Please ensure that the para-
chute can be fitted in the correct position. It may not move or turn in the container.
Modern parachutes are generally easy to fit in the container. Very large parachu-
tes (more common in older models) may struggle to fit into the container. If the
parachute fits too tightly, we do not recommend using this combination.
In every case a compatibility check must be performed. It must be ascertained
whether, and how, the parachute and harness work together. If they are incompa-
tible, another parachute must be selected.
Steerable parachutes
The SOMNIUM can be fitted with a steerable parachute like the BEAMER, which
is manufactured by NOVA. This requires the standard red connection straps to
be removed and replaced with those of the steerable parachute. They should be
connected to the shoulder loops using screwgate carabiners (minimum 2400 daN
strength). These loops are sited under the elastic mesh. Please secure both straps
with O-rings.
As with standard parachutes, steerable parachutes also require a compatibility
test. NOVA recommends that this is performed at an approved service centre.
Fitting the parachute
1
Connect the parachute to the harness
The first step is to connect the parachute to the harness. This means that the pa-
rachute bridle and the harness attachment point must be connected.
We recommend using oval carabiners with a minimum breaking load of 2500 kilo-
grams (>2500 daN). The
Maillon Rapide Normal
has been proven to have a suffi-
ciently high breaking load (depending on the diameter).
The bridle and harness attachment point should be secured into place with rubber
O-rings. Close the maillon gate with a spanner. To do this, follow the instructions of
the maillon manufacturer.
The connection strap is securely fastened (interlocked loops) to the shoulder
connectors. When fitting the parachute, check this connection. Alternatively, with
steerable parachutes the connection strap can be fitted to the main hang points.
Please follow the recommendation of the parachute manufacturer.
The connection strap should always be securely stored in the red or grey covered
channel.

Fit the deployment handle
Next, connect the deployment handle to the inner bag. Choose the loop at the front
of the parachute container bag and thread the black loop of the deployment handle
through the container loop. Then thread the red deployment handle through the
black loop to connect the container to the deployment handle.
Pull the deployment handle and the inner bag apart to tighten the lark’s foot. The
black strap and the loop of the inner bag should be looped together without any
play.
