Solving System Problems

Refer to your Quick Start GuideAre all cables properly connected and secured? Refer to your Quick
Start Guide.

The built-in LCD panel of your notebook computer may not be selected or the screen brightness or
contrast needs adjustments. Note that function keys are printed in a different colour on the keyboard.
Use these keys in combination with the

Fn

key to perform specific actions (like increasing or

decreasing the LCD brightness).

Refer to

If your notebook computer is powered using the battery, the battery power is probably very low. Insert
a charged battery or connect the AC adapter.

Problems After The System Has Been Running Correctly

After the system hardware and software have been running correctly, many problems occur when the
computer configuration has been changed. Use the checklist below to try and correct the situation.

Problems at System Start-up

Error Messages are Displayed or Beep Codes Are Emitted

When you power on your computer, the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) performs a number of tasks
called the Power On Self Test (POST). These tasks test and initialise the hardware and then boot the
operating system from the hard disk drive.

Non Fatal Errors

If during the POST, errors occur that do not stop the boot process, then a message, similar to the following
display, may appear:

(Error Message Line 1)
(Error Message Line 2)
Press <F2> for Setup,<F1> to Boot

You should note the error and press the

F1

key to resume the boot-up process, or

F2

to enter the BIOS set-

up utility and correct the error.

Fatal Errors

Errors that prevent the boot process from continuing are communicated by either a series of audible

beeps

(the BIOS cannot access the video card to display the message) or

error messages

.

Note:

fatal and non-fatal errors are usually related to hardware-related problems. If you recently

added a new hardware device, take a look at the section below and check that the new hardware has
been correctly installed (fully inserted in its respective slot, for instance). If this does not solve the
problem, please refer to

"Help From The Technical Support Centre"

.
