Cabling, Connecting up
All larger MLA Mini physical configurations – i.e., those of more than 4 Minis plus one MSX
sub per side - are built up from multiples of the basic 4 Minis plus one MSX combination. This
applies to all physical rigging options, ground stacked, partially flown or fully flown. Thus all
MLA Mini arrays must consist of 4, 8, 12 or 16 cabinets; no other quantities are possible. These
array sizes will require 1, 2, 3 or 4 MSX subs respectively.
The simplicity of this “modular” approach means that cabling is limited to that required by a
single 4 Mini plus one MSX sub combination; apart from the necessity for different cable lengths
due to rigging requirements, only one wiring method is employed between the MSX power plant
and the MLA Mini cabinets.
The MLA Mini system is intended for both fixed installations and touring; a rather different
approach can be used for fixed installations as all system cabling will be in place for the long
term. For touring use, advance knowledge of the venue and of the system configuration to be
deployed is vital to ensure that cables of the right length are available on the day.
In fully-flown configurations, consideration must be given to longer cables for power, audio
(analogue or digital) and the U-Net network, as all these are connected at the MSX sub, which
will be at height. In partially-flown configurations (where the MLA Minis are flown but the MSX
subs remain at stage level), different cable lengths are likely to be required for power, audio and
U-Net, but speaker cables will inevitably be longer.
The diagrams below show some commonly used configurations, with the cabling that will be
required.
