7.1
INTRODUCTION
The (Direct Current) DC system on the Maritimo C47 is 24 volts rather than
the more common 12 volts. The advantage of the higher voltage is that
there are far fewer losses than with 12 volts. Although 24 volts presents little
hazard to human health from electrocution, caution should still be observed
when working on the DC system as extremely heavy currents can flow under
short circuit conditions, leading to the risk of fire and eye damage.
7.2
BATTERIES
The Maritimo C47 has six 12 volt lead acid batteries arranged in three banks;
these are located in the engine room (see Figure 7.1).
The port starting bank consists of two 70 AH batteries connected in series
to form 24 volts, as does the starboard bank. The ‘Port’ bank starts and
supplies power to the port engine, and the ‘Starboard’ bank starts and
supplies power to the starboard engine. The remaining two batteries, each
of 120 AH capacity, are coupled in parallel and make up the ‘House’ bank.
Under normal conditions this bank supplies energy to most of the
DC systems that operate the boat.
7.3
BATTERY MAINTENANCE
Lead acid batteries are reasonably trouble free and seldom fail without
giving the operator some advance warning. If it is necessary to disconnect
or re-connect any of the battery cables, then
all isolator switches
must be off!
We strongly recommend that this job is only carried out by
a qualified marine electrician. The batteries are maintenance free with an
indicator ‘eye’ located in the centre of the top of the case (see Figure 7.2).
This indicator will show green in the normal operating range of the battery,
black if it becomes discharged, and white when the useful life has been
exhausted. The importance of reliable batteries in the modern cruiser cannot
be overemphasised as they are essential in the true sense of the word.
When replacing these items, never mix a bank with new and old batteries;
always replace the complete bank, and only use first-quality manufacturers.
The average life of a bank depends on such a range of variables that it
is impossible to offer firm recommendations; however, two years would
appear to be the minimum, five years the maximum, with the average
falling somewhere in between. Clean the tops of the batteries with a soft
rag and check the terminals for tightness. Combat terminal corrosion with
petroleum jelly.
