The unit is located in the engine room (see figure
above) and is operated using AC power supplied
either from shore power or the ship’s generator.
It is not possible to power this unit from the
inverter.
The salt water is piped to the low pressure pump
on the right hand side of the desalinator unit.
The low pressure pump will operate at 4 bar to
supply the high pressure pump (located within the
frame) via two pre-filters. The pre-filters will need
to checked or changed every 50 hours depending
on the quality of the sea water picked up.
The sea water is then pumped from the high
pressure pump through the membranes which
separates the brine water and the fresh water.
This high pressure pump operates at 58 bar which
can be adjusted by turning pressure adjustment
valve located on the left hand side of the unit.
It is important that the membranes are chemically
flushed upon servicing the unit every 250 hours
or 12 months to prevent scale build up. It is also
important to make sure you fresh water flush
the water maker after every use to clean the
system. The unit has been programmed to flush
for three minutes every seven days provided the
power to the machine is left on as well as the
boat’s fresh water pump. The brine collected is
then discharged overboard.
