ANCHORING
A complete discussion on anchoring techniques is beyond the scope of this
manual; however, a few tips can make your boating more enjoyable:
Always note the state of the tide when preparing to anchor and deduct
the fall from the depth of the water.
In fine conditions, the amount of chain released should be roughly three
times the depth of the water—for heavy conditions, five times.
Gently bring the boat astern against the anchor to dig it into the bottom.
Have a plan in mind as to what you will do in the event that the anchor
starts to drag, particularly at night.
Regularly inspect the ground tackle and service the winch on a regular
basis.
When recovering the anchor, always have the engines running.
The anchor winch should be regarded simply as a chain recovery device
(see Figure 11.5). It is not intended to be a strong point of the vessel and
is not designed for that role. When anchoring in heavy weather, a bridle
should be used as shown in Figure 11.7. This strop is made from rope,
preferably 25 mm nylon, and shackled to the chain after the anchor has
been set. The bridle is fed over the two cleats on the bow.
