11.1
INTRODUCTION
Before using the boat, we recommend that the operator develops the habit
of making a checklist and inspecting those items on that list.
11.2
OPERATIONAL CHECKLIST
The following is an example of a checklist that could be implemented when
returning to the boat after a period of time. Other items can be added as
required.
1
Inspect all mooring lines for wear and chafe.
2
Inspect the interior of the boat for any signs of weather leaks.
3
Do a thorough inspection of the engine room, and in particular the
following:
Check coolant levels in both engine header tanks.
Check oil levels.
Check generator’s water and oil levels.
Inspect water separators in filters of all fuel systems.
Inspect batteries.
Check that the engine room air inlet vents are not obstructed.
Make sure that all seacocks required are open.
Do a general inspection of all hoses and fuel lines.
4
Carry out a general inspection of the foredeck and cockpit, looking for
signs of general wear.
5
If taking the boat out, make sure the safety strop has been removed
from the anchor and that the anchor is ready for use in the event of
an emergency.
11.3
STARTING THE ENGINES
Start and stop the engines in accordance with the instructions issued by
engine manufacturer in their operator’s manual.
The manual supplied by engine manufacturer is contained in the ship’s
owner’s blue portfolio cases. We strongly recommend that this manual is
read and understood by all persons who are going to operate the engines.
11.4
MANOEUVRING THE VESSEL
The Maritimo C47, being a twin-screw vessel, has the ability to be turned
by using only the propellers. With one engine in the ahead position and
the other in the astern, the boat will rotate around its own length. If the
rotation of both propellers is reversed, the boat will turn in the opposite
direction. You can make such a turn in either direction by engaging the
appropriate gears. Be aware that wind and tide action may drift the vessel
from its original position during these manoeuvres. This should only ever be
attempted when the vessel is stationary or nearly so.
Never attempt this
at speed!
When going astern, it is wise to do so slowly, as excessive speed
when reversing could swamp the cockpit and cause water damage.
If the boat is equipped with a lower helm station, be aware that the visibility
from this position is restricted.
