Change oil filter
Marinediesel engines use single or twin spin-on lube oil filters. You may require a tool to
remove them. It is very important to fill up the new filters with oil (completely full) before
mounting them on the bracket. If the filters are not filled with oil the engine will run
without lubrication for some time before the filters fill up and this can lead to catastrophic
engine failure. It is also important to lubricate the o-ring of the new filters to ensure
proper seal. Once oil and filters have been changed, start the engine and verify that
there is oil pressure within five seconds. Once oil pressure is evident make sure that the
new oil filters seal properly and that there are no oil leaks. Stop the engine and check
the oil level on the dipstick, top up if needed.
Change supercharger oil
Early commercial and all pleasure craft engines are equipped with a closed lubrication
system for the supercharger. This is a very specific high temp oil and the proper
specification oil must be used. Use a small suction pump or one of the plugs on the side
of the supercharger gear housing to remove the oil, flush out the housing with new oil if
the oil is discolored. Torque the side plug into place (if used for excavating the oil) and fill
up the supercharger to the proper level on the dipstick.
Clean supercharger oil filter
On commercial engines with no closed lubrication system for the supercharger, the
supercharger is lubricated with filtered and cooled engine oil through a spray nozzle
seen in the photo below. This nozzle needs to be cleaned every time the engine oil is
changed or it may clog up and lead to supercharger failure, the oil filter needs to be
replaced at the same time. The filter is removed, cleaned with gasoline or other chemical
then blasted clean with pressurized air.
