Section 7 - Engine
Service instructions
For full service schedules please see separate service book that is supplied with the
engine. The service book also specifies oil quality etc. If the service book is missing
please contact your local Marinediesel representative to obtain a replacement.
The service intervals are reflected for standard duty cycle E5 and if engines are used
outside of this duty cycle it may be required to reduce the number of hours between
scheduled maintenance. If this is not followed it can cause oil to be diluted by soot and
catastrophic engine failure can occur that
would not be covered by warranty
. Please
contact your local Marinediesel representative if you have any questions related to this.
Below are the different periodic maintenance procedures in more detail, for information
on at what number of engine operating hours for these please refer to the service book:
Check for water leaks and debris in oil cooler
This is a visual check on all the water hoses on the engine to make sure there is no
leakage, this includes the water intakes hoses all the way to the through hull fitting.
If there is a leak on the raw water side before the impeller pump on the engine this may
cause the impeller pump to draw air and the engine will overheat.
If there is a leak on the raw water side after the impeller pump this can lead to the bilge
being flooded and/or reduced cooling of the engine.
If there is a leak on the closed cooling system on the engine the coolant level will be
reduced step by step until the engine overheats.
If there is a failure of an impeller or if the engine is run without a water strainer (filter)
these particles will in a normal case be stopped by the oil cooler which is located directly
after the impeller pump. One this passage becomes restricted it will lead to overheating
of the engine oil and further down to overheating of the engine.
Check for fuel leaks
Check all fuel lines and fittings for leaks. Also check return fuel lines and injector fittings
for leaks. A leak will result in poor performance but even more commonly in poor starting
of the engine. A fuel leak is also a safely hazard from a fire standpoint and must be
avoided at all times. If the bilge is clean a fuel leak is normally detected by fuel in the
bilge. If this detection is not possible then use a clean white towel to check all
connections for possible leaks, fuel should visibly show on the clean towel.
