8. With a large screwdriver or lever (Figure 8-23), lift the
upper shoe and remove the roller and retainer as a unit.
9. Repeat Step 8 for the lower shoe roller and retainer.
10. If springs are connected by spring post (horse collar),
push cam end of upper shoe toward the cam. Otherwise
push cam end of both shoes toward cam. With a spring
removal tool, hook onto the spring and pry to unhook the
upper shoe return spring. Remove the spring and
discard (Figure 8-24).
11. Do the same for the lower return spring
12. Remove the shoes from the axle (Figure 8-25).
13. Remove the slack adjuster; reference Slack Adjuster
Removal this Section.
14. Remove the camshaft by grasping the camshaft head
and pulling outboard.
15. Remove the bolts attaching the air chamber bracket to
the spider and pull it away from the spider.
16. Remove spider-to-axle attaching nuts and bolts and
remove the spider (Figure 8-26).
Lift up the end of
the brake shoe.
Remove the roller
with retainer spring.
