Adjust torch Lead/Lag Angle
All Redheads are equipped with Lead/Lag adjustment capability at the torch mounting. Minor adjustments
of the electrode angle can be made by loosening the two torch mounting screws, rotating the torch, and then
retightening the screws. The R-1 has an additional adjustment by moving the arm assembly pivot point as
described below:
9.5.1
R-1 Lead/Lag Adjustments
Because of its small size, the electrode angle would vary widely if a single arm pivot point were used on the
R-1 to cover the entire pipe size range. Therefore, three positions are provided, and are selected based on
pipe size as stated below.
Loosen the leaf-spring tensioning screw (see
Torch Lead/Lag Adjustments for ALL
Redheads
) completely by rotating the hex screw counter-clockwise with a 2mm driver.
Remove the pivoting arm assembly by inserting a 1/8" nut driver (supplied in the tool kit) through
the hole (see
Mounting Locations, R-1 Head Only
) and rotating the pivot screw counter-
clockwise. Remove the arm assembly (the pivot screw is captive and cannot fall out).
When the Pivoting Arm Assembly is being relocated for a new pipe size, the Spring Engagement
Post must also be moved to one of the three additional threaded holes on the inner pivoting arm
(see
Mounting Locations, R-1 Head Only
). The purpose of this "post" is to engage the
leaf-spring. This post has a slot for a screwdriver and is threaded into the arm. For the proper post
location for a given pipe size, see the table below.
The Spring Engagement Post should be lightly lubricated using grease (preferably high
temperature).
There are three threaded hole locations in which to mount the Pivoting Arm Assembly (see
Mounting Locations R-1 Head Only (Pivoting Arm Assembly on Rotary Plant)
). The Pivoting
Arm must be installed in the proper location for the pipe O.D. to be welded (see
Table 7
,
Pivot Arm
Pipe O.D)
and
Mounting Locations R-1 Head Only (Pivoting Arm Assembly on Rotary
Plant)
). If a specific workpiece size is not shown on the table, choose the hole location closest to
that workpiece size.
