2 Description
2.1 Theory of Operation
The UVALOC System is a UVA lamp system for curing UV adhesives. Exposure times
must be controlled with an external timer to ensure precise repeatability of curing results.
UV lamps also emit heat energy that is usually insignificant, however, if heat sensitive
parts are being processed, a sample part should be tested by exposing it to a cure cycle.
It may be necessary to move the part farther from the lamp and increase the cure time.
The UV power should be monitored regularly using a radiometer. Measurements should
be made using the same type of radiometer and preferably the exact same instrument, if
possible.
Super pressure mercury vapour lamps provide maximum UVA intensity. They are
produced worldwide in manual operations and are therefore subject to some variations.
Manufacturers typically specify a ±10% tolerance for radiation output.
A brand new lamp goes through a characteristic "warm-up" period. After the first
20 hours of operation reaches the intensity level of 100%. Till 500 hours the UV output
may drop up to ca. 8%. After 20 hours the lamp reaches long-term stability, allowing
operation for several hundreds hours with extremely low deterioration of performance.
Over the life time of about 1000 hours the UV output may drop in total ca. 20% based on
the intensity level of 100% mentioned above.
However, any drop during the warm-up phase is not really relevant for users, as the UV
output delivered at the end of lamp life is the parameter which actually counts. A realistic
user will design his adhesive bonding process in a way to make sure that 50% of the UV
output of a new lamp will be sufficient for his requirements.
