This is the unit for SG of crude oil defined by the American Petroleum
Institute.
API degree is obtained from the following equation:
API degree = (141.5/G)-131.5
Where G is mass of crude oil at 60°F (15.56°C) and shows ratio of mass of
the same volume of water at 60°F.
Crude oil varies in quality from place to place where produced. Some oil
contains mostly gasoline, some mostly heavy oil or those easily solidified or
none solidified.
