Hitching Up Your Kimberley
Safety chains
Cross chains under the hitch for safety. (If your Kimberley comes adrift from the
vehicle the drawbar will fall on the crossed chains). The shackles need to be securely
tightened.
Breakaway Switch (where fi tted)
Your Kimberley may feature an electronic Breakaway Switch
mounted on the side of the drawbar near the hitch. If your
Kimberley comes adrift from the vehicle this unit will activate
the trailer brakes. You must connect the trigger wire to a
shackle on the tow vehicle. This shackle must only be used
for the trigger wire.
Using the Parking Brake
Your Kimberley features a button which can activate the hydraulic disc brakes and a valve to lock them as
a parking brake. Remember - In line is OPEN, Cross line is CLOSED. Never travel with the brake valve CROSS
LINE!

Tow-ball Weight & Tongue Height
It is important that the tow-ball weight on your vehicle does not exceed that recommended by the
manufacturer of the vehicle or the tow-bar (whichever applies). The tow-ball weight varies signifi cantly with
the distribution of the load you add to your Kimberley. Your vehicle and tow bar must be capable of these
requirements and the height of the tow bar tongue should be approx. 520mm (1 ft 8.5 in) when the Kimberley
is attached. For best performance your KK should be slightly lower at the hitch by approx 25mm (1 in). This
height can be adjusted by the airbags or the Vehicle tow tongue if the vehicle is “lifted”.
Loading for Best Stability and Towing Performance
Weight distribution in a Kimberley has a signifi cant impact on the towball weight and therefore safety and ease
of towing. Some recommendations:
• Generally, weight can added forward of the axle position with a positive impact providing the gross vehicle
mass (GVM) or Towball weight limit is not exceeded.
• Store heavier items down low and lighter items higher.
• Our experience is that our Kampers tow much better with a heavier drawbar weight particularly in off road
conditions at approx 15% of the actual weight of the Kamper. However, you still need to make sure this is
within the legal limits of your vehicle and steering of the tow vehicle is not compromised.
• In the Karavan - the rear hatch is designed to take light bulky items only eg. power leads, water hose, buckets,
canvas awning and light-weight chairs/stools. Avoid putting high-lift jacks, chains and other heavy loads in
the rear hatch.
• The front storage boxes will take a Honda EU20i (and smaller) generators with only a positive impact on the
ease of towing. Likewise with two jerry-cans.
• If carrying bulky items like bicycles, they should be safely stowed in the drawbar-mounted ISI Bicycle Carrier
designed for Kimberleys. Kampers can also be fi tted with a rear-mounted swing-away bicycle carrier
