Software Installation and Configuration Adding Instruments to the Interface
The GPIB Address String
When programming the L4490A/L4491A over GPIB, the instrument’s GPIB
address is included in the address string as shown below:
GPIB0:: 9 ::INSTR
Changing the GPIB Address
The L4490A/L4491A GPIB address can only be changed programmatically. The
command used to set the GPIB address is:
SYSTem:COMMunicate:GPIB:ADDRess < address >
The command can be abbreviated by including only the upper-case letters in the
command syntax. The command can be sent from the ‘Interactive IO’ window, or
from the ‘SCPI Command Interface’ window - via a LAN connection.
When the address is changed, the new GPIB address IS NOT updated in Connec-
tion Expert if the instrument was previously configured.
From the Connection Expert window, highlight the instrument whose address
was changed and then select ‘Change Properties ...”. Within the configurable
properties window, change the address to the new address setting and select
‘OK’ (Figure 3-6).
The Web-Enabled Instrument Interface and Interactive IO
The Web-enabled instrument interface featured in Chapter 4 is not available
from the GPIB interface.
For GPIB operations, the Connection Expert ‘Interactive IO’ utility can be used to
send SCPI commands from the L4490A/L4491A command set to the instrument.

If the L4490A/L4491A GPIB address is unknown, the address can be
queried from the LAN interface by sending the following command from
the ‘Interactive IO’ or ‘SCPI Command Interface’ window:
SYSTEM:COMMunicate:GPIB:ADDRess?
