CHAPTER  3

PREPARATION  FOR  OPERATION

Dressing  the  \·Theel.

The  grindinr,  wheel  is  carefully  fitted  on  the  wheel  hub

and  mounted  on  the  wheel  spindle,  whereafter  it  is  dressed

until  it  is  round.  Eventuallv  the· sides  are  dressed  until

they  are  runnine.

11

The  wheel  is  dressed  bv  means  of  a  diamond  mounted  in  a

holder  and  placed  on  the  table  or  niarnetic  chuck_.  The  position

of  the  diamond  on  the  table  with  respect  to  the  r,rinding

wheel  is  important  for  proper  dressing.  The  diamond  should

be  located  slirhtly  to  the  left  of  the  wheel  centerline

(about  12  mm  - ;  in).  This  is  a  safety  precaution  to  pre-

vent  the  diamond  from  digr, ing  into  the  wheel.

The  diamond  is  passed  across  the  wheel  by  r.oeans  of  the  Hy

draulic  Rapid  Cross  Movement  (see  page  8).

Choose  the  direction  of  cross  saddle  with  crossfeed  rever

sing  lever

(36)

and  turn  the  crossfeed  control  lever

(25)

slightly  to  the  right  until  the  required  feed  is  obtained.

FOR  GOOD  DRESSING  IT  IS  ESSENTIAL  THAT  THE  DIAMOND  IS  SHARP

SO  ABRASIVE  GRAINS  HILL  BE  COMPLETELY  FRACTURED  AND  PROJECT

FROI1  JHEEL  BOlD.

Instructions  for  the  use  of  the  IIvclraulic  Over-the-Wheel

Dresser  accessory  are  given  on  page  17.

Balancin0  the  Hheel.
Balancing  of  the  ,,,heel  hub  and  r,rindinr  wheel  is  done  by

means  of  the  balancin2  arbor  and  the  balancing  stand.  Re

lease  all  3  balancing  weights.  Find  the  heaviest  spot  and

place  one  of  the  weights  here.  By  placing  and  rnovinr  the

other  weiehts  symmetrically  in  proportion  to  the  first

placed  wei

r,

ht  the  unit  is  balanced  as  carefully  as  possible.

To  d1

.,

ess  and  balance  the  wheel  proceed  in  the  following

ma:nner:

1)  Fit  the  wheel  to  the  Hheel  hub

and  mount  the  unit  on  the  Hheel

spindle.  Uote  that  the  nut,  which

fastens  the  hub  to  the  spindle

has  left  hand  thread.  Note  the

safety  nut.

2)  Dress  the  wheel.

3)  Remove  the  wheel  asset:lbbr  from

wheel  sDindle  and  balance  the

wheel  a;  descriped  above.
