Chapter 1. Introduction
This chapter introduces the IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch 2109 Model M12 switch
(hereafter referred to as the Model M12 or the M12) and contains the following
information:

Overview
The Model M12 is a high-performance core switch for storage area networks
(SANs), available in 16–port increments from 32 to128 ports. It can operate as a
single switch in a fabric or in a fabric that contains multiple switches.
High-availability features of the M12 include:
v Two redundant hot-swappable control processor (CP) cards with automatic
failover
v
Up to eight hot-swappable 16–port cards
v Four hot-swappable power supplies
v
Three hot-swappable blower assemblies (two are required for adequate cooling)
v Two redundant ac inputs
v
Non-disruptive upgrades for Fabric OS v4.1 and later
v
Worldwide name (WWN) card that is hot-swappable in Fabric OS v4.1 and later
The M12 also includes the optional Advanced Security feature, which enables
policy-based security mechanisms integrated with certain versions of the Fabric OS.
The optional Advanced Security feature has the following capabilities:
v Centralized security management
v
Fabric-wide security policies to control access
v Port and switch level access control
v
Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
v Encryption of management data such as passwords
v
Strong and non-reputable authentication between switches
The Fibre Channel ports support link speeds of 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps (inbound and
outbound). They also automatically negotiate to the highest common speed of all
the devices that are connected to the port and are:
v
Compatible with short wavelength (SWL) and long wavelength (LWL) small form
factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers
v Universal and self-configuring
v
Capable of individually becoming fabric loop ports (FL_ports), fabric ports
(F_ports), or expansion ports (E_ports)

Software features
Fabric OS version 4.1 supports the M12. Fabric OS includes all the basic switch
and fabric support software as well as optionally licensed software that is enabled
by using license keys. Fabric OS is made up of two major software components:
firmware that initializes and manages the switch hardware, and diagnostics.
