backup software and NWPA drivers
When installing the ISV software, there may not be an option for NWPA drivers
when you are asked to select the SCSI Host Bus Adapter (HBA) type. For
example, Backup Exec (up to version 8.0) and ArcServe/ArcServeIT (up to
version 6.6) do not give this option.
However, the majority of backup software on NetWare (not including the Novell-
supplied backup applets Sbackup and SBCON), access the tape drive using the
SCSI ASPI layer, which is provided by the NWPA ASPI driver "nwaspi.cdm". This
ASPI driver uses the services provided by the SCSI HBA ".ham" driver. So, as
long as the ".ham" driver and "nwaspi.cdm" are loaded, ISV Backup Software can
be used with NWPA.
if changes are necessary
If the ".ham" and ASPI driver are not already loaded by default, add the lines as
described below into your startup.ncf file to load the relevant ".ham" and NWPA
ASPI driver "nwaspi.cdm".
For example, for the Symbios 53c895 driver:
Type
"LOAD SYM8XXNW.HAM slot=2 SCAN = 3[0-1]"
to load the Symbios
driver for HBA in slot 2, and SCAN for LUNs 0 and 1 on SCSI Target ID 3.
Then type
"LOAD NWASPI.CDM"
to load the NWPA ASPI driver.
or, for the Adaptec AIC7880 driver:
Type
"LOAD AHA2940.HAM slot=3 lun_enable=03
multlun_targets=08"
to load the Adaptec driver for HBA in slot 3 and scan for
LUNs 0 and 1 on SCSI Target ID 3.
Then type
"LOAD NWASPI.CDM"
to load the NWPA ASPI driver.
Reboot the server after making these changes.
Remember that the LUN options given above are only required if using an
Autoloader. They can introduce a significant overhead to the initialisation time of
the driver, so only use them if necessary. If using an Autoloader, you should also
add
"SCAN ALL LUNS"
to the end of the autoexec.ncf file.
This method works with most ISV backup software, including BackupExec and
ArcServe. It is recommended that you use the latest versions of ISV Backup
Software.
known issues with .ham driver support of ISV backup software
You should take note of the following:
1.
A known and major issue is that NWPA does not guarantee consistent
enumeration of SCSI HBAs from one boot to the next. Therefore if more
than one SCSI controller is used to attach tape drives, and NWPA reorders
the HBA enumeration, ArcServe may not bind correctly to the
controller/tape drive. This is a known problem that CA are actively working
on. A workaround is to use only one SCSI HBA to attach tape drives.
2.
It is strongly recommended that the latest versions of ISV Backup Software,
including latest Service Pack/Patches are used.
At the time of writing, for latest version of Veritas Backup Exec is 7.5 for NetWare
3.x, and version 8.0 for NetWare 4.x / 5.x.
The latest version of CA ArcServeIT for NetWare is v6.6, for which Service Pack 1
is now available. This patch can be downloaded from
http://support.cai.com/Download/patches/asitnwee.html
ArcServe v.6.1 users should use Service Pack 2, and additional patch files as
advised by CA. Information can be found at

instructions for installing BackupExec with NWPA
During the installation of BackupExec from a windows client, you will reach a
screen saying:
"Select the type of controller installed in the
destination server"
.
Proceed as follows:
1.
Select the option
"other ASPI compatible"
.
2.
Continue with the installation but before you start Backup Exec on the
server (using
"load bestart"
), load either
"sym8xxnw.ham"
(Symbios
SYM53C895 chipset),
"aha2940.ham"
(for Adaptec AIC7880 chipset), or
"aic78u2.ham"
(for Adaptec Ultra2 SCSI chipset).
3.
If not already loaded by startup.ncf, load
"nwaspi.cdm"
.
IMPORTANT: a DDFS ".dsk" driver for the SCSI chipset must not also be loaded
Performing a backup operation using Backup Exec v8, after installing Service
Pack 2 for NetWare 5, might result in the following error: "There are currently no
partitions defined which can service this job. Partitions are defined to support
certain operations, users, and media format. Please contact your system
administrator for assistance." This error is caused by the installation program for
the Support Pack not updating the file, SMDR.NLM, correctly.
Novell have rectified this problem in the latest release of Support Pack 2 for
NetWare 5, which can be downloaded from their support web site. Alternatively,
using the original version of the Support Pack, the problem can be rectified in the
following way. Run BESTOP to stop Backup Exec, and change the attributes of
SMDR.NLM (found in SYS:/SYSTEM) so that it can be written to. Now overwrite
the file with that from the service pack (found in directory
..\NW5SP2\PRODUCTS\SYS\SYSTEM) and re-start your server. Further details

instructions for installing ArcServe or ArcServeIT with NWPA
During installation of ArcServe from a windows client, you will reach a screen
saying:
"Adapter Board Configuration on Server...."
Proceed as follows:
1.
Select the option
"shared and/or ASPI"
On the next screen:
1.
Select
"Board 0"
, and for the supported adapter select either
"SYMBIOS
LOGIC ASPI SCSI"
if using a Symbios SCSI controller, or
"Adaptec
AHA-2940 (ASPI)"
if using an Adaptec AIC7880 chipset (also found in
the AHA2940UW). In actual fact, the selection here is arbitrary - it just
appears to be used to decide what to display in the message below :
2.
Ignore the message saying:
"Important : you must load the
following drivers before running ArcServe: sdmsnetX.dsk
and netaspiX.nlm ; X=netware version"
(for Symbios), or
"Important : you must load the following drivers before
running ArcServe : aic7870.dsk and aspitran.dsk"
(for
Adaptec). This message is ArcServe assuming you are using a .dsk driver,
whereas in fact you are using a ".ham" driver.
On the next screen:
1.
Select host number
0
.
2.
Continue with the installation, but before starting ArcServe on the server
(using
"load astart6"
), you must load either
"sym8xxnw.ham"
(Symbios SYM53C895 chipset),
"aha2940.ham"
(for Adaptec AIC7880
chipset), or
"aic78u2.ham"
(for Adaptec Ultra2 SCSI chipset).
3.
If not already loaded by startup.ncf, load
"nwaspi.cdm"
.
4.
If using an autoloader, install the
Changer Option
.
