6-5. Power-Up Tests

The HP 16500A power-up tests check the
mainframe circuitry only. None of the option
modules are tested at power-up. The tests run
every time power is applied to the instrument and
the results of the tests are reported on the screen.

If a disk is not installed in a disk drive, the advisory
"no disk" is added to the Rear and Front Disk
Tests. If the operating disk is not installed, and
the mainframe passes the power-up tests, the
message SYSTEM DISK NOT FOUND is
displayed. To start the system, install the system
disk into either disk drive and cycle the power.

Note

If any power-up tests fail, refer to section
6-7 ,"Troubleshooting."

The power-up tests perform the following circuit
checks:

ROM Test

The ROM Test performs a checksum of both
ROMs and compares the checksum value to a
stored value. The test responses are "passed,"
"impaired," or "failed." If the message "impaired"
is displayed, only one of the ROMs on the
microprocessor board is defective. If the message
"failed" is displayed, both ROMs are defective.
For ROM Test failures, suspect a faulty
microprocessor board.

RAM Test

The RAM Test performs an abbreviated read/write
test at various memory locations. The test returns
a pass or fail message. For RAM Test failures,
suspect a faulty microprocessor board.

Interrupt Test

The Interrupt Test checks the microprocessor
interrupts (interrupts 2 thorough 7). This test
returns a pass or fail message. If any interrupts
are active, the test fails. For Interrupt Test
failures, suspect a faulty microprocessor board.

Display Test

The Display Test checks the display RAM and the
CRT controller. During the RAM test, the entire
address range is checked. The CRT controller
ensures that an End-Of-Frame interrupt is
generated. The test will report a fail message if
either the display RAMs or the controller tests fail.
For Display Test failures, suspect a faulty
microprocessor board.

HIL Controller Test

The HIL Controller Test checks the HIL interface
circuitry on the microprocessor board to verify that
the microprocessor board can talk to the
front-panel board. This test reports a pass or fail
message. For HIL Test failures, suspect a faulty
microprocessor board.

Front-Panel Test

The Front-Panel Test checks the front-panel
circuitry for correct operation and reports a pass or
fail message. For Front-Panel Test failures, verify
the continuity and connection of the cable from the
microprocessor board to the front-panel board. If
a problem is not found with the cable, suspect a
faulty front-panel board.
