Procedure 3: Light Alkaline Cleaning
A.
Reason for the Job
WARNING:
– DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES. THE SOLVENTS ARE DANGEROUS.
– USE EYE PROTECTION. DO NOT LET THE SOLVENTS TOUCH YOUR SKIN.
– CLEAN THE PARTS IN A ROOM WHERE AIRFLOW IS SUFFICIENT.
– DO NOT CLEAN NEAR AN OPEN FLAME.
CAUTION:
– CAREFULLY OBEY THE CLEANING PROCEDURES, OR REPLACE THEM WITH
A PROCEDURE WHICH IS SPECIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURER IF YOU USE
EQUIVALENT PRODUCTS.
– AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE PROCEDURE, YOU MUST PUT PROTECTIVE
CAPS OR APPLICABLE PACKAGING MATERIAL ON THE PARTS.
This procedure is specially applicable to the cleaning of Aluminium-based alloys (the recommended
materials do not contain Sodium Hydroxide, which causes the corrosion of light alloys).

Job Set-up Information
(1)
Use materials that agree with Specification MIL-TT-C-490C method III .
(2)
Example:
– cleaning material (M51A),
– cleaning material (M53A).

WARNING: USE EYE PROTECTION. DO NOT LET THE SOLVENTS TOUCH YOUR SKIN.
ALKALINE MATERIALS CAUSE IRRITATION TO YOUR EYES AND YOUR SKIN.

Preparation
(a)
For the dilution proportions, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
(b)
Mix 5% of the material with water, at a temperature between 70 °C and 80 °C (158
°F to 176°F).

Cleaning
(a)
Clean the parts with a lint-free cloth made moist with the detergent solution. As an
alternative use a soft brush.
(b)
Flush the parts with clean running water, at ambient temperature.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE HOT AIR (100 °C (212 °F)) TO DRY SUB-ASSEMBLIES WHICH
CONTAIN PRESS-FITTED PARTS.
(c)
Dry with low-pressure compressed air.
