34 Test Procedure
Step
Action
5.
The metal end of the screwdriver should get pulled to the coil nut when the coil is energized.
Note that the nut may have a slight amount of residual magnetism from normal operation.
6.
After performing the function, the solenoid should go off (note that down solenoid requires
“up” be performed to turn it off) and the screwdriver will release from the coil nut.
Testing the Solenoid Coil
The best way to test the coil of a solenoid is with an ohmmeter. This can show if the coil is open or if
the coil windings have shorted. This can be used to verify the test above. Also, if a plow has a problem
with controllers going bad, it may be due to a solenoid with shorted windings. Test as follows:
Step
Action
1.
Remove the control wire to the solenoid. Hydraulic solenoids rely on the body of the power
unit to supply a return ground path so they will have only a single control wire going to
them.
2.
Measure the resistance between the control wire connection on the solenoid and the body of
the solenoid.
3.
Refer to the following information. If the meter shows high resistance (open) or the resistance
is abnormally low (shorted) then the solenoid windings are bad.
Down Solenoid
Coil Resistance: 9.0 Ohm
Right & Left Solenoid
Coil Resistance: 3.5 Ohm
