HYDRAULIC SOLENOIDS
DWG NO. 4040
HYDRAULIC SOLENOID
Theory of Operation
The hydraulic solenoids allow the controller to
determine the flow of the hydraulic oil in the hy
-
draulic cylinders and, therefore, the mechanical
movements of the plow. When the solenoid coil
is energized the steel plunger of the solenoid is
pulled into the coil. The plunger is attached to
a valve that moves with the plunger and deter-
mines the flow path of the hydraulic oil. The so
-
lenoid is spring loaded so that when it is off the
valve returns to its original position.
Typical Problems
The coil winding of the solenoid can develop two
types of problems. The first, and the easiest to
spot, is when the winding opens up so that the
solenoid plunger is not pulled in. The second
type of problem occurs when some of the wind-
ings short together and cause the coil to draw
more current than is normal.
While the plunger may still operate but the in-
creased current may shorten the life span of the
controller. This may cause erratic operation of
the hydraulics.
An intermittently failure of the coils is usually
temperature related. Test the coil when hot.
Down coils are the most susceptible to this type
of failure due to the constant use in the float
mode.
The hydraulic valve portion of the solenoid may
also be the source of problems. Normal wear or
contaminated oil may cause sticking of the valve
and a number of related problems. Refer to the
Hydraulic Unit Service Manual if a hydraulic
problem is indicated.
