Chain tension
Without gear shift/gear hub
1. Support the bicycle on its stands.
2. Press the chain up and down and check whether you can
move the chain through a distance of between
10 and 15 mm (see
Figure W-7
).
NOTICE:
For bicycles with complete chain protection, check
instead for grinding noises when turning the pedal drive.
10 - 15 mm
10 - 15 mm
Figure W-7: You should be able to push the chain upwards
and downwards through a distance of a minimum of 10 and
a maximum of 15 mm.
• If the chain can be pushed through a distance of less than
10 mm or more than 15 mm upwards or downwards or
the chain is grinding against the full chain protector, have
the chain tensioned by your specialist dealer.
Derailleur gears
For bicycles with derailleur gears, the chain is tensioned by
the chain tensioner in the shift system.
1. Support the bicycle on its stands and check that the chain
is not sagging (visual check).
2. Apply light pressure to the chain tensioner in a forwards
direction and check that it repositions itself of its own
accord (see
Figure W-8
).
• If the chain is sagging or the chain tensioner does not
return to its original position of its own accord, have the
chain tensioner repaired by your specialist dealer.
