5.2 Package Piercer Adjustments
5.2.1 Two Step Device for Cans
Note:
When testing other packages than cans, block the two step knob out, using the spacer
provided.
5.2.2 Change the Piercer Configuration
This procedure describe the conversion of the piercer from metal cans or glass bottle
configuration to PET bottle configuration (revert the procedure to convert piercer back to
metal cans and glass bottle configuration).
Piercing device
Remove both black plastic spacers (push them out laterally), located on top of the two
guide rods.
Unscrew both piercing rod upper stops (below spacers), pull them all the way up, and
lock in place.
PET Bottle Neck Holding Clamp
Remove the can holding plate attaching screws and attach the PET bottle holding clamp.
Use the adjustment knurl to set the fork height. Top of the bottle cap must be aligned with
the groove mark on the clamp body.
5.2.3 Adjust Piercing System Height
Check and eventually adjust the piercing system height:
1) Raise the piercing lever to vertical position.
2) Support the piercer assembly with your hand, release the orange locking handle,
and lift up the assembly.
3) Place a sample package in position.
4) Positioning plate: Lower the assembly until the positioning plate rests on the top
of the can, or glass bottle.
For analyzing cans’ headspace, the two step device must be
used to limit the travel of the piercing knife. During the first step,
only a small orifice is created on can surface to sample the
headspace, while avoiding chance of pressure leakage.
Additionally, the sampling tube is maintained above foam and
liquid.
Pulling the knob (second step) allows for full travel of the
piercing knife, creating a bigger hole to allow the sampling tube
to the bottom of the can for liquid sampling. Sampling tube down
travel is limited by the adjustable stop (see below).
Piercing head
When piercing plastic caps, the material is cut (with the
cutting knife 32111A). For metal (caps and cans), the
material is pierced (with the piercing knife 32106A).
Remove the metal piercing knife (ref. 32106A) and install
the PET cutting knife (ref. 32111A).
