Fit the spinner and propeller as described for the electric version. If you intend hand-
starting the two motors instead of using an electric starter, note that the propeller
should be fixed on the motor shaft at about the “1 o’clock” position at the onset of
compression. Repeat the procedure with the second motor.
Tailplane and fin
Glue the hinges half-way into the elevators.
Allow the glue to set hard, then temporarily (i.e. without glue) attach the elevators to
the tailplane in order to check the fit. When you are satisfied, pull the elevators out
slightly, apply cyano to the exposed hinges, and push them fully into the tailplane.
Leave a gap about 0.5 mm wide along the hinge axis to allow the elevators to deflect
properly.
Before the tailplane can be glued to the fuselage, the covering film over the joint
areas must be removed; slit the film carefully using a very sharp knife:
Place the tailplane in the recess at the tail end of the fuselage, and set it central and
“square”, i.e. it should project on both sides by an equal amount, and form a right-
angle to the fuselage centreline when viewed from above.
Use a felt-tip pen to mark the outside line of the fuselage on the tailplane, top and
bottom.
Remove the tailplane again, lay a steel ruler just inside the marked lines, and run the
tip of a sharp knife or a hot soldering iron along it to cut through the covering film.
Take great care to avoid scoring or cutting the tailplane sheeting. Peel off the film
inside the cut lines.
Apply glue to the joint area, place the tailplane on its mount, and position it accurately
as described earlier. Pin the tailplane in place while the glue is setting, to avoid it
slipping out of position.
Use your fingertips to locate the slots for the elevator horns, then use a sharp balsa
knife to remove the covering film over them. Roughen the joint surfaces of the horns
thoroughly before gluing them in the slots.
Remove the film over the pushrod exit slots in the fuselage using a sharp balsa knife
or a hot soldering iron. Screw locknuts and clevises on the two elevator pushrods,
and connect them to the outer holes in the horns.
Install the elevator servo in the servo plate as shown in the photo, using the fixings
supplied in the servo accessory pack.
The two elevator pushrods are linked together at the servo end using a DUO pushrod
connector; when clamping the two pushrods please ensure that both elevators are
exactly in line, i.e. neither should be higher or lower than the other. Snip off the
excess pushrod material using a pair of side-cutters.
