18 Maintaining and Troubleshooting the Gateway ALR 9000 Server
Storage Bays
The system is equipped with fourteen storage bays which can support up to 78-GB
of fixed-media storage.
•
three 3.5-inch bays: one external front-accessible bay, one with factory-
installed 1.44-MB 3.5-inch floppy diskette drive, and one internal-
accessible bay
•
five 5.25-inch bays (one with factory-installed SCSI CD-ROM Drive):
all front-accessible and can support any 5.25-inch device or 3.5-inch
device with a special mounting bracket
•
six 3.5-inch Quick Hot Swap bays housed in a RAIDCage (RAIDCage
6D) which supports 1-inch and 1.6-inch hot-swappable devices.
Installing a Device in the Internal Bay
This bay supports 3.5-inch devices of fixed-media type only (such as hard disk
drives).
1. Open the system as described on page 15. Remove both side panels.
2. From the right side of the chassis, insert the device into the top most area
between the two mounting brackets located towards the front of the chassis.
3. Position the device so that the mount holes on both the device and mounting
brackets are aligned.
4. Secure the device with the screws that came with it.
5. Connect the device cable, making certain to match pin 1 on both connectors.
On most standard cables, pin 1 is designated by a colored wire on the cable.
In some cases, the connector is keyed.
6. Connect a device power cable to the device (these connectors are keyed).
7. Close the system (as described on page 16) and power it up.
8. Enter the BIOS Setup program by pressing
<F2>
before the system boots, as
prompted on the monitor screen.
9. Press
<Esc>
to save the device configuration information to CMOS and
reboot the system.
10. For more information regarding the BIOS Setup program, refer to Chapter 3.
