14 IR CAPTURE
FAQ: WHAT IS FULL-RES?
“Fractal Audio introduced FullRes impulse response technology in
2021. This new technique allows for IR up to 1.37 seconds (far longer than even UltraRes™). These can be
used for realistic recreations of ambient spaces without the increased latency normally associated with
long IRs. Producers and engineers often use “Room Mics” to increase the depth and liveliness of recordings.
However, the typical live room has a reverb time of 500-700 ms, well beyond the 20-40 ms afforded by
typical IR processing. FullRes IRs can capture a typical live room and even small-to-medium halls and clubs,
and can even be used as a convolution reverb. As of this writing, only the Axe-Fx III supports FullRes IRs.
Any FullRes IRs you capture with this utility can be stored on the unit in “User Cab Bank 3 (FR)”.
SPEAKER MIKING TIPS
The tone you get from a mic’d speaker depends greatly on the type(s) and position(s) of the microphone(s).
Select a mic that is well-suited for guitar cab recording and position it according to your preference.
Information is widely available about mic placement, distance, angle, etc., but don’t be afraid to experiment.
Each mic needs to be connected to a preamp to bring the signal up to line level for processing.
The preamp also contributes to the tone, so a high-quality preamp (like an API or Neve) is
generally preferred, but even the preamps in an inexpensive mixer can produce excellent results.
Do NOT allow the mic preamp to distort or the result will be an IR with excess high end.
With an optional mixer, you can combine multiple microphones to capture a blend.
Using an EQ is OK, but dynamics processign such as compression
can cause the IR to misrepresent the source.
If the cab is loaded with multiple speakers, you should listen to each one to see how they compare.
Even speakers of the same type can sound inherently different, and different placement within
a cab can also have an effect. Some cabs are even loaded with different types of speakers,
whether side by side, in an “X” pattern, or semi-randomly. (We once captured a “legendary” 4x12
that had two of one type speaker, one of a different type, and one non-working speaker!)
