• "Misc" tab (fig. 25)
As is names suggests this window comprises a number of parameters settings
related to miscelleaneous functionalities.
Correct setting of "
Port
" is essential as it is a condition for proper
communication between the computer and the loudspeaker designated as
"
master " (cf. product User Mahual) .
" Units " will tell the software to speak either metric or imperial.
Finally the " Trace mode " option allows to keep a track record of all commands
sent to and received from the speakers. The files created when enabling this
option are only useful in the unlikely event of a malfunction. Do not tick this
box unless being invited to do so by Focal Customer Services, otherwise your
hard disk might end up being cluttered by those increasingly bulky files
(named
FMTraceS.txt and FMTraceR.txt) .

In case your system is liable to be used by a number of different people, we
strongly recommend that you protect the access to the "
Utilities " sub-menu. To
do so please go to the "
Password
" sub-menu from the "
Preference
" menu.
From this sub-menu it is indeed possible to change the content of the speakers
internal ROM.
Two tabs are available: "
S/N reset
" (fig. 27) and "
DSP Upgrade
" (fig. 28) .
Contrary to normal system operation in which commands are sent by " Focal
Manager
" to the master speaker which in turns passes them on to others via
Midi connection, all information sent from the "
Utilies
" sub-menu must be
individually transmitted to each speaker.
Subsequently, the computer will have to be connected to only one (switched on)
speaker, with its "
CONTROL
" switch set to "
PC
" position; please also make sure
that no MIDI link goes to any other speaker.
Caution: never power the speaker off during any of these operations
otherwise you might face serious problems.
The " DSP Upgrade " tab (fig. 28) allows the user to carry out by him/herself an
upgrade of the internal DSP firmware contained in each loudspeaker.
This facility make it possible to take advantage of the lastest improvements
achieved by Focal, regarding "
Focal Manager " as well as the loudspeakers
themselves. The lastest versions of both DSP firmware and " Focal Manager "
are made available on the internet (see Focal-JMLab website) , or on CD-Roms.
The "
S/N reset
" tab enables reallocation of a serial number to a particular
speaker by writing this number into the speaker internal memory. This operation
is initially carried out in the factory, at the final production stage. However
when a DSP upgrade takes place the existing serial number is overwritten and
needs resetting.
