packets transferred between IP Multicast
Routers and IP Multicast host groups to
identify IP Multicast group members.
Interet Group Management Protocol
(IGMP)
A protocol through which hosts can register
with their local router for multicast services. If
there is more than one multicast router on a
given subnetwork, one of the routers is made
the “querier” and assumes responsibility for
keeping track of group membership.
IP Mulitcast Filtering
A process whereby a switch can pass
multicast traffic along to participating hosts.
Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)
Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) is
part of an IEEE specification (802.3ad) that
allows you to bundle several physical ports
together to form a single logical channel.
LACP allows a switch to negotiate an
automatic bundle by sending LACP packets
to the peer. It performs a similar function as
Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) with Cisco
EtherChannel.
LAN Segment
Separate LAN or collision domain.
Layer 2
Data Link layer in the OSI 7-Layer Data
Communications Protocol. This is related
directly to the hardware interface for network
devices and passes on traffic based on MAC
addresses.
Layer 3
Network layer in the OSI 7-Layer Data
Communications Protocol. This layer handles
the routing functions for data moving from
one open system to another.
LED
Light emitting diode used for monitoring a
device or network condition.
Link Aggregation
See Port Trunk.
Local Area Network (LAN)
A group of interconnected computers and
support devices.
Media Access Control (MAC)
A portion of the networking protocol that
governs access to the transmission medium,
facilitating the exchange of data between
network nodes.
Management Informatiion Base (MIB)
An acronym for Management Information
Base. It is a set of database objects that
contains information about a specific device.
Multicast Switching
A process whereby the switch filters incoming
multicast frames for services for which no
attached host has registered, or forwards
them to all ports contained within the
designated multicast VLAN group.
Network Diameter
Wire distance between two end stations in the
same collision domain.
Port Mirroring
A method whereby data on a target port is
mirrored to a monitor port for troubleshooting
with a logic analyzer or RMON probe. This
allows data on the target port to be studied
unobstructively.
Port Trunk
Defines a network link aggregation and
trunking method which specifies how to
create a single high-speed logical link that
combines several lower-speed physical links.
Remote Monitoring (RMON)
RMON provides comprehensive network
monitoring capabilities. It eliminates the
polling required in standard SNMP, and can
set alarms on a variety of traffic conditions,
including specific error types.
