module level, not to the component level. In many cases, problems can be resolved by changing a menu setting,
loading new firmware (pg. 44) or initializing parameters to factory defaults (see below).
A full set of schematics can be found on our web site.
Due to the use of fine -pitch IC s in the K3, most signal
tracing must be done ve ry care fully using fine-tip probes.
Please do not attempt this unless you have
experience in troubleshooting surface-mount assemblies; otherwise, you could damage your K3.
DO NO T ADJUST ANY TRIMMER C APAC ITO RS O R PO TEN TIO METERS
unless you have
access to appropriate lab test equipment and have consulted Elecraft support regarding the proper settings. All
trimmers have been aligned at the factory, and if mis-adjusted could degrade performance.
Error Messages (
E RR x x x
)
An error message may be displayed on VFO B at power-up or during normal operation. In most cases error
messages are due to a problem with a single option module, and may be due to incorrect firmware configuration.
If you see an error message on VFO B (
E RR X X X
):
Write down the error message, as well as any associated
error data shown on the VFO A display (e.g.
E 00 0 05
). T hen tap any switch to clear the error code. Multiple
errors may occur; in this case, write down each of the messages and VFO A data, if any, before you clear them.
See Error Msg table (next page ) for details on spe cific

messages and their associate d data values.
Module Removal
TURN O FF TH E POW ER SUPPLY OR DISCONNEC T TH E POW ER SUPPLY C ABLE be fore
removing or installing modules. If you drop a metal tool inside the K3 with powe r still applie d, you can
short a powe r supply or control line , re sulting in damage to the RF board or othe r modules.
Module de-installation proce dure :
To see if an option module is the cause of an error message, you must
de-
install
it as described below, or you may not be able to tell if removing the module had any effect:
T urn off power
Remove the module
Set the associated CONFIG menu entry to
NO T I NS T
.
(See
CONFIG:KAT3
, etc.)
Note:
If the affected
module is on the KRX3 (sub receiver), you must tap
S UB
to display its configuration setting. Otherwise the
setting shown applies to the main receiver. This applies to the KBPF3 and KNB3 modules, as well as crystal
filters, all of which are duplicated on the RF and sub receiver boards.
T urn power off and wait at least 5 seconds
T urn power back on
