Automatic Program Selection Using a Bar Code Scanner
The normal method for selecting and running a test program is to use the SELECT and RUN functions
on the main menu as explained in the previous section. It is possible for an NX Tester to have over a
hundred test programs resident in memory. In this case, the manual task of selecting a program by
scrolling through such a lengthy list might be burdensome.
An alternate method is to use a bar code scanner attached to Serial Port 2 and scan a barcode that
represents either a program name or a part number. The NX Tester will then look for a match of the
scanned data – it first will look for a program whose name matches the data. If it cannot find a program
whose name matches, it then looks for a defined part number in each program. Once the first match is
found, the NX Tester will automatically select and run the program.
To use this capability, use a Dynalab Bar Code Laser Scanner, part number 5-1083, and follow these
instructions:
•
Connect the scanner to Serial Port 2 of the NX Tester. Make sure that Serial Port 2 is configured for
RS-232 communication.
•
Make sure the NX Tester is at the Main Menu.
•
Scan a barcode that represents a program name or a part number defined in one of the programs.
When the NX Tester is at the Main Menu, it will automatically listen for data on Serial Port 2 and will
attempt to match a program name or part number based on the scanned data, using the following ordered
set of rules:
1
Look for a match with the name of the currently selected program.
2
Look for a match with any part number defined in the currently selected program.
3
Look for a match with the name of any program in the directory.
4
Look for a match with any part number defined in any program in the directory.
If a match is found, the NX Tester will automatically select and run the program. If no match is found,
the NX Tester will indicate that with a message on the display. If there are identical part numbers
defined in multiple programs, the first occurrence found will be executed. If the NX Tester is connected
to a network and registered with a NX Server, the search feature will first look for a match on the NX
Server, then will look for a match in the NX Tester’s program directory.
A substring of the scanned data may be specified by using the SUBSTRING function in the
CONFIGURATION menu, as explained in a previous section of this document.
